Military Simulation - As a veteran of the Australian Army, Dr Adam Easton knows that military training in the environment can be dangerous. Easton founded SimCentric Technologies in 2008 with the goal of providing soldiers with the best training under the best conditions, to provide simulation-based military training that not only prepares more effectively for war, but also saves lives.
With operations in the UK, Sri Lanka and Australia, SimCentric currently serves military organizations around the world. A few years ago, they switched to Unreal Engine as the basis for all of their simulation offerings, which they say has allowed them to quickly create a variety of products.

"For the first time as a company, we can offer end-to-end solutions to our customers without relying on other technologies," says Easton, the company's CEO. "The engine that doesn't exist is what we need to move forward."
Training And Simulation
Training around the Unreal Engine When first founded, SimCentric used long-established military simulation platforms to build training systems, but later found these systems too limited. “With these legacy systems, it's hard to meet technical performance benchmarks and really push the envelope,” says Easton. "We have to look elsewhere."
Meanwhile, Tom Constable, SimCentric's vice president of innovation, founded P-TAC Interactive, a war simulation provider. From the beginning, Constable has used the Unreal Engine as the basis for all of its products.
Constable, a veteran and avid gamer, has done important research on the performance characteristics of simulations during his own training. "It doesn't make sense that the DoD uses the same platform to look a certain way, and then in the evening when I play the first shootout, I see the fidelity and the justice that comes from that," he says. – That's when I started to discover the Unreal Engine.
SimCentric has since acquired P-TAC Interactive. With Constable, SimCentric has expanded both its off-the-shelf and traditional solutions with tools that support non-existent engines, many of which are licensed. For example, their SAF-FIRES product is a standards-based training simulation system that can be deployed on authorized JTAC training simulators.

"The Uncommon Engine has very interesting technology, and more importantly, Epic Games has a real interest in the simulation industry," says Easton, adding that this grant gave SimCentric the ability to rapidly develop its training offerings in a short period of time.
SimCentric's premier training program specializes in joint fire and air support. But with the Unreal engine as a consistent foundation, they've expanded into storage, smart wearables, life research, artificial intelligence, and more recently, virtual reality and immersive learning.
"One of the challenges with acquiring different data streams is becoming experts in many specific verticals of the market," says Easton. "The appeal of Unreal Engine is that it provides a framework that handles all these different tasks." One of the downsides of simulation platforms, Easton explained, is that they can be exported to other delivery modes, such as virtual reality, mobile or desktop, and add features that require a complete overhaul. On the other hand, game engines like Unreal Engine are constantly updated to use the latest technology. This means that instead of limiting their simulations to a single platform, SimCentric can provide the client with output in any format.
Easton and Constable understand that Unreal Engine takes care of these aspects of development right from the start. "The real power of Unreal Engine is that we don't have to worry about doing it ourselves," says Easton. "We want to focus on what we do best, which is understanding the specific pillars of applied learning and making sure we deliver the best work experience within those pillars. We don't want to worry about the underlying technical challenges."
Virtual Army Experience
Easton also appreciates the Virtual Business Center, where SimCentric can host ready-made environments, weapons and scripts to quickly implement proof of concepts. "We're modifying and repurposing Business content, but this provides an early stage that shortens development time and increases our speed," he says. "Without this trade, we would not have been able to achieve what we have achieved in recent years." The central element of SimCentric's innovation analysis and many simulations is the soil representing real conditions. “We saw how a rough machine can make a landscape beautiful,” says Easton. "The goal is to bring in geo-specific data and Unreal will automatically generate the terrain, including the roads." , buildings, trees and greenery and create the best environment that will be faster and even better."
To do this, SimCentric has developed a tool within the Unreal Engine that organizes files, high-resolution maps and satellite images to create the best conditions for modular buildings and structural documents. Easton is excited to see what opportunities such a tool will open up for SimCentric.
He says, "We want to get to the point where we can take any part of the world and create a beautiful scene over a large area quickly, automatically, almost with the push of a button." - he says - and we are getting closer and closer."
Another area of SimCentric's research is the scalability of system training. SimCentric is currently working with the British Royal Air Force to provide reality-based training. "They conduct department-level activities, from target demonstrations to departmental assaults and assaults," says Easton.
Serving In The Military Doesn't Make You Special
The training consists of two parts, one outside and one inside virtual reality. Soldiers design a situation outside of virtual reality, then enter the virtual world and play out the situation multiple times in the same location.
Easton says, "It allows them to change systems and processes, lead and manage, and then go into real-world exercise or fire training with the confidence that their team understands what they're doing. That's what needs to be done," he says. Easton.
The next step involves system analysis and then scalability. "The final round will be a platoon reality training, where a platoon will have 25-30 members in the environment," says Easton. "We'll see how the Unreal Engine works and see what kind of training Soldiers and leaders get from training in a live environment." Using Game Engines for Military Training Can game engines provide the level of accuracy that the military, a non-threat sector, needs? When asked this question, Easton points to his employees' years of military experience and the products they make. According to him, this dispels all doubts in the client's mind.
Constable's comment on the "correct" question points to a useful aspect of using Unreal Engine, using the example of ballistic trajectory. "From that point of view, the accuracy of the model depends on two things: the math behind the model and the breakout time associated with the central rate," he said. "One of the biggest advantages of Unreal Engine is that we can achieve higher frame rates than we have ever seen with other software in the simulation industry. This means that the accuracy of the ballistic trajectory calculation is greater than it would have been if you had used other software for the to calculate."

Constable found that the training process in Unreal Engine was immediately accepted by the youth. "Purchasing with soldiers in the private sector is faster because they use the bike in their spare time," he says. "They understand. They got the picture. They understand how to navigate the environment. "
As for the future, Easton is excited to see where Unreal Engine takes them, especially the new features of Unreal Engine 5, which promises to change the way content is created. "That alone increases the cost of the military," he says. "We're just starting to see the progression of what gaming machines can do."
